• Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before it is sealed, the unfinished teak timber looks quite similar to oak, but once it is sealed it will go to dark brownish colour. 

  Like other exotic timbers, the teak can be difficult to seal with normal waterbase primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. Although this type of primer, provides the best base and approach to finishing exotic timbers, it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar) or stain the floors with whitetinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application, and if this option is considered it is best left to a professional with experience.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

• Can an engineered wood flooring with underfloor heating be restored?

  Hi Tom,

  Yes, any engineered wood flooring can be sanded with or without underfloor heating, as long as the thickness of the top layer of the product is at least 3 mm.

  Engineered flooring products are manufcatured in thickness of 14-15 mm, 18 mm and 20 mm. Thicker planks go with thicker top layer (between 3 mm and 6 mm), so in case you can check the thickness of your plank, you will be also aware how many times the floors can be sanded. 

• Is it possible to sand engineered wood flooring?

  Engineered wood floors can be sanded and the restoration process is done in the same way as hardwood or parquet floor sanding, allowing you to remove deeper dents and scratches and to renew the floor’s appearance. However, sanding engineered wood flooring should always be approached with extra care, because it is only the top layer of solid wood that is sandable, rather the whole plank. Therefore, before you do any works on engineered floors, you need to make sure that the top layer is at least 3 mm thick to avoid any unrepeatable damages. You can do this by checking the thickness at door bars or around radiator pipes.

  We strongly advise hiring a professional floor sanding company for your engineered floor restoration rather than trying to do it yourself because if you do not have the required skills and knowledge, you can easily cause damage and may end up having to replace the floors all together.

• How many coats of oil are included in your service?

  Our sanding and oiling service includes 2 coats of clear hardwax-oil or 1 coat of colour oil followed by 1 coat of clear oil. Ocassionally we can increase the number of coats depending on the timber species we are sealing.

• How many coats of lacquer are included in your service?

  For domestic floor sanding services, we apply 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats of lacquer. The final sheen options are extra-matt, matt, satin, and gloss.

  For floor sanding in public spaces (offices, schools, church halls), we use 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of commercial-grade lacquer, with sheen options including extra-matt, matt, and satin.

  Extra coats are available upon request, but we do not recommend more than 5 coats, including primer.

• Can you extend exsiting flooring over a fireplace hearth?

  Yes, if you are planning to remove a fireplace hearth and you have parquet flooring, floorboards or planked flooring we may be able to help. After the repairs, with matching the floor spare material, the floors will need to be sanded and refinished.
