• Do you use reclaimed parquet blocks for removing & extending fireplace hearths?

  Thank you for contacting us regarding parquet flooring restoration.

  Fireplace hearth removal and extension with reclaimed parquet blocks is one of our regular services accompanying parquet floor repairs and renovations. We are able to supply additional reclaimed parquet blocks, matching the size of your flooring and use them to re-stich the parquet flooring once the fireplace heart is removed.  After the floor extension, a complete sanding and re-varnishing will provide a beautiful and new look to your parquet flooring and there will be no trace of the fireplace heart.

• Oak stained in dark wood base and white grain effect

  Hi,

  This example is shown on oak timber. This type of finish is achieved by application of Active Stain on top of oak timber, flollowed by application of white hardwax-oil on top - buffed in and sealed with another clear coat of oil on top.

  Some active stains are available from Woca (Active stain 1, 2, 3 and 4) and white oils are available from Osmo, Fiddes, Treatex (and other brands). 

  The process of active stain is slow - takes about a day and oils are slow-drying. It may be worth looking for a pre-finished product with similar appearance, instead of starting from scratch on bare wood.

• Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before sealing, unfinished teak can resemble oak in its light color. However, once sealed, teak typically darkens to a rich brownish hue.

  Like other exotic timbers, teak can be tricky to seal with normal water-base primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. This type of primer provides the best base for finishing exotic timbers, and it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar), or stain the floors with white-tinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application. Applying these finishes on teak can be challenging, and we highly recommend to have a professional with experience in exotic woods handle the application.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

• How much does it cost to restore parquet flooring?

Final cost will be affected from additional services like gap filling and staining.

• How long does it take before the floors can be used again after the sanding service?

  During the restoration service, the floors can handle light traffic without disrupting the process.

  During the sealing process, the floors can be walked on between coats. After the final coat is applied, lacquered floors can accommodate foot traffic in 2 hours, while hardwax-oil floors require 5-10 hours. Drying times can vary depending on air humidity and the season.

  Furniture should be moved back into place the following day.

• Is the floor restoration process noisy?

  Yes, the floor restoration process, particularly the sanding phase, is inherently noisy. Professional floor sanding machines, especially drum sanders used for the initial heavy-duty work, operate at high decibel levels, often comparable to heavy traffic or industrial machinery (around 85-90 dB). While modern dust-free sanding systems significantly reduce airborne dust, they do not eliminate noise. The noise intensity can vary throughout the process, being loudest during initial coarse sanding and becoming somewhat quieter with finer grits. It's advisable to make arrangements for pets and sensitive individuals, and potentially notify neighbours.
