  Sanding stairs and banisters is not an easy task and it requires high level skills and craftmanship. Most of the work involved is done manually and therefore it is very time consuming.   Urine stains on timber floors can be particularly challenging to remove. Ideally, the stains should be cleaned up immediately, as it's not just the liquid but the compounds in the urine that cause discoloration. Unfortunately, urine tends to penetrate deep into the wood. So, restoration (floor sanding & refinishing) will not be an option in this case.

  The best solution is often to replace the affected planks. Going with the option for the local replacement of planks is the best approach for the floor repairs, however, this requires having spare planks that match your existing flooring. • What is the best finish for parquet flooring?

  Parquet flooring can be sealed with both lacquer or hardwax-oil. There are some advantages and disadvantages to both that you need to be aware of in order to make an informed decision. The most appropriate product usually depends on the type of flooring and the intensity of its use, as well as the desired appearance effect.

  For floors exposed to high level of foot traffic, we always recommend floor laqcuer as they provide a better protection layer. For our floor sanding projects we always use water-based lacquers such as Bona Mega or Bona Traffic HD, Junchers HT700, which are hard-wearing and long-lasting finishes.

  Alternatively, oil-based wood finishes provide a more natural feel and appearance, but they require more frequent maintenance in order to maintain the protection of the timber. We recommend Osmo Polyx hardwax-oil, which is a popular choice for our dust-free parquet restoration service.

  Whether you choose hardwearing laquer or oil-based sealant for your floors, make sure that you give it a good and smooth finish before the sealant is applied.

• How many coats of lacquer are included in your service?

  For domestic floor sanding services, we apply 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats of lacquer. You can choose from the available sheen options, which are extra-matt, matt, satin, and gloss.

  For floor sanding in public spaces (offices, schools, church halls), we use 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of high quality commercial-grade lacquer. Sheen options available are extra-matt, matt, and satin.

  Extra coats are available upon request, but we do not recommend more than 5 coats, including primer.

• Can you restore parquet flooring without sanding?

  Yes, it is sometimes possible to "restore" parquet flooring without full sanding, although the extent of the restoration will be limited. This non-sanding approach is typically suitable for floors with minimal surface wear, light scratches, or dullness, where the existing finish is still largely intact. Methods include buffing (screening) to lightly abrade the surface, and then applying a fresh coat of finish (re-coating or re-lacquering).

• Is the floor restoration process noisy?

  Yes, the floor restoration process, particularly the sanding phase, is inherently noisy. Professional floor sanding machines, especially drum sanders used for the initial heavy-duty work, operate at high decibel levels, often comparable to heavy traffic or industrial machinery (around 85-90 dB). While modern dust-free sanding systems significantly reduce airborne dust, they do not eliminate noise. The noise intensity can vary throughout the process, being loudest during initial coarse sanding and becoming somewhat quieter with finer grits. It's advisable to make arrangements for pets and sensitive individuals, and potentially notify neighbours.
