• Is lacquered finish better than hardwax-oil for my original floorboards?

  The short answer is lacquer. The timber of the original floorboards is pine - pine is a soft, porous wood, which makes it less suitable for sealants that rely on deep penetration, such as hardwax-oil. While hardwax-oil works well for hardwoods, lacquer creates a protective surface layer, making it a more versatile option. It offers superior protection for all wood types, including softwoods like pine, and will provide a more durable finish for your original floorboards.

• Is it possible to sand engineered wood flooring?

  Engineered wood floors can be sanded and the restoration process is done in the same way as hardwood or parquet floor sanding, allowing you to remove deeper dents and scratches and to renew the floor’s appearance.

  However, sanding engineered wood flooring should always be approached with extra care, because it is only the top layer of solid wood that is sandable, rather than the whole plank. Therefore, before you do any works on engineered floors, you need to make sure that the top layer is at least 3 mm thick to avoid any unrepeatable damages. You can do this by checking the thickness at door bars or around radiator pipes.

  We strongly advise hiring a professional floor sanding company for your engineered floor restoration rather than trying to do it yourself because if you do not have the required skills and knowledge, you can easily cause damage and may end up having to replace the floors all together.

  Hi,

  This example is shown on oak timber. This type of finish is achieved by application of Active Stain on top of oak timber, flollowed by application of white hardwax-oil on top - buffed in and sealed with another clear coat of oil on top.

  Some active stains are available from Woca (Active stain 1, 2, 3 and 4) and white oils are available from Osmo, Fiddes, Treatex (and other brands). 

  The process of active stain is slow - takes about a day and oils are slow-drying. It may be worth looking for a pre-finished product with similar appearance, instead of starting from scratch on bare wood.

• Can you match the existing color of my parquet floor, or will it be different?

  When restoring your parquet floor, our aim is to either match the existing colour or achieve your desired new colour. If you wish to retain the original look, we can often achieve a very close match by carefully selecting the finish (oil or lacquer) that brings out the wood's natural tone, or by using a light stain if the original floor had one. However, it's important to note that natural wood undergoes "patina" and UV exposure over time, so a perfectly identical match to an aged, un-sanded area (like under a rug) might be challenging. If you want a significant colour change, we can achieve this through staining the sanded wood before applying the final clear finish, allowing you to choose from a wide range of shades. We always recommend testing samples on your floor to ensure satisfaction with the colour.

• How many coats of oil are included in your service?

  Our sanding and oiling service includes 2 coats of clear hardwax-oil or 1 coat of colour oil followed by 1 coat of clear oil.

  Depending on the timber species and its specific requirements, we can occasionally increase the number of coats to ensure optimal protection and finish.

• How often is re-oiling needed for my wood floor?

  The frequency of re-oiling for your wood floor depends significantly on the level of foot traffic and the specific type of oil finish applied. In high-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens, or living rooms, re-oiling might be needed every 6 to 18 months. For areas with moderate traffic, every 1-3 years might suffice, while in low-traffic zones such as bedrooms, a re-oil might only be necessary every 3-5 years or even longer.
