• What is the best finish for parquet flooring?

  Parquet flooring can be sealed with both lacquer or hardwax-oil. There are some advantages and disadvantages to both that you need to be aware of in order to make an informed decision. The most appropriate product usually depends on the type of flooring and the intensity of its use, as well as the desired appearance effect.

  For floors exposed to high level of foot traffic, we always recommend floor laqcuer as they provide a better protection layer. For our floor sanding projects we always use water-based lacquers such as Bona Mega or Bona Traffic HD, Junchers HT700, which are hard-wearing and long-lasting finishes.

  Alternatively, oil-based wood finishes provide a more natural feel and appearance, but they require more frequent maintenance in order to maintain the protection of the timber. We recommend Osmo Polyx hardwax-oil, which is a popular choice for our dust-free parquet restoration service.

  Whether you choose hardwearing laquer or oil-based sealant for your floors, make sure that you give it a good and smooth finish before the sealant is applied.

• Do you sand bamboo flooring?

  While bamboo (as final product) is not exactly timber, it is possible to sand and varnish bamboo flooring. However, bamboo floor sanding needs to be done with extreme care and it requires a specific approach and highly skillful flooring technicians. We will not recommend sanding and varnishing bamboo flooring yourself.  Bamboo floor sealing, for example, requires the application of solvent based, rather than water-based sealants. Also, wood floor staining is not recommended on bamboo floors.

We are able to supply additional reclaimed parquet blocks, matching the size of your flooring and use them to re-stich the parquet flooring once the fireplace heart is removed.  After the floor extension, a complete sanding and re-varnishing will provide a beautiful and new look to your parquet flooring and there will be no trace of the fireplace heart.

• Can you oil a wooden floor without sanding?

  Yes, it is possible to re-oil a wooden floor without full sanding if the existing oil finish is still largely intact and the wood itself is not deeply scratched, stained, or damaged. This process is often referred to as "refreshing" or "maintenance oiling." It involves thoroughly cleaning the floor with a specialised wood floor cleaner, and then applying a fresh, thin coat of oil. This method rejuvenates the existing finish, restores its lustre, and replenishes the oil within the wood, extending its life without the need for abrasive sanding. However, if the floor has significant wear, deep scratches, or areas where the wood is exposed, sanding will be necessary to achieve an even and durable restoration.

• What are the pros and cons of oil-finished hardwood floors?

  Oil-finished hardwood floors offer a distinct set of pros and cons. Pros include a beautiful, natural, matte or satin aesthetic that deeply enhances the wood's grain and character. They are often easier to repair in specific areas, as individual scratches or worn spots can be spot-repaired without needing to re-sand the entire floor. Oil penetrates the wood, providing deep protection and allowing the wood to breathe. Cons typically involve more frequent maintenance, as they require regular re-oiling, especially in high-traffic areas, compared to lacquered finishes.

• Will the restoration process affect my skirting boards or walls?

  The floor restoration works go up to the very edge of your wooden floors with high-speed rotary power tools to achieve uniform finish throughout. Touch ups or even repainting may be required after the floor works to skirting boards or beading. This may as well become necessary after removal of the masking tape, which we use to protect your skirting boards. Although we use low-tack masking tape, sometimes the paint below may be too fragile or recently applied and can chip off during the removal.
