• Can you repair blobs on my recently varnished wooden floors?

  The appearance of blobs may be a result of an insufficient bonding between the different coats of varnish or between the first coat of floor varnish and the timber.

  This sometimes happens if the floors have not been perfectly sanded to a very smooth finish before the application of the varnish or when the previous sealant was not completely sanded down before the new varnish was applied.

  The only solution we would recommend is to re-sand and re-varnish the floors again to ensure a smooth sanded surface and a proper application of the coats of varnish on top, ideally done by a professional flooring company to avoid this happening again.

  However, you need to ensure that your floors have a sufficient remaining solid wood top layer available for another sanding. Each time the floor is sanded, a small portion of the top layer is removed. If the top layer becomes too thin, further sanding could potentially expose the underlying core material. It’s essential to measure the remaining thickness of the wear layer to confirm whether sanding is a viable option.

• Oak stained in dark wood base and white grain effect

  Hi,

  This example is shown on oak timber. This type of finish is achieved by application of Active Stain on top of oak timber, flollowed by application of white hardwax-oil on top - buffed in and sealed with another clear coat of oil on top.

  Some active stains are available from Woca (Active stain 1, 2, 3 and 4) and white oils are available from Osmo, Fiddes, Treatex (and other brands). 

  The process of active stain is slow - takes about a day and oils are slow-drying. It may be worth looking for a pre-finished product with similar appearance, instead of starting from scratch on bare wood.

• How can I do a whitewashed finish on my wooden floors?

  You can achieve a durable whitewashed effect on your engineered wood flooring with both lacquers and oil-based products if you choose the right product and apply it properly. The choice of lacquer or oil will define the final appearance.

  Achieving whitewash effect with lacquer will result in a more uniform colour. This is done by either by mixing a white colourant with a clear lacquer / primer, use ready-mixed primer, or by applying white stain on the sanded floors, followed by the application of multiple coats of clear floor lacquer on top. For our floor restoration projects where staining to whitewashed finish is required, we use mainly white pigmented primers by Bona or Junckers.

  Oil-based products have ready-mixed stains and colours in various shades of white - available from all major brands - Osmo, Blanchon, Woka, Loba, Bona, Rubio Monocoat, Treatex and more. Hardwax-oils colours create more prominent grain than lacquers - main difference between the two finishes. Clear coat on top is required after the application of the colour, except for Rubio, which is a 1 coat system.

• Can you extend existing flooring over a fireplace hearth?

  Yes, if you are planning to remove a fireplace hearth and you have parquet flooring, floorboards or planked flooring we may be able to help. After the repairs, with matching the floor spare material, the floors will need to be sanded and refinished.

• Can you match the existing color of my parquet floor, or will it be different?

  When restoring your parquet floor, our aim is to either match the existing colour or achieve your desired new colour. If you wish to retain the original look, we can often achieve a very close match by carefully selecting the finish (oil or lacquer) that brings out the wood's natural tone, or by using a light stain if the original floor had one. However, it's important to note that natural wood undergoes "patina" and UV exposure over time, so a perfectly identical match to an aged, un-sanded area (like under a rug) might be challenging. If you want a significant colour change, we can achieve this through staining the sanded wood before applying the final clear finish, allowing you to choose from a wide range of shades. We always recommend testing samples on your floor to ensure satisfaction with the colour.

• How much does it cost to restore original floorboards?

  The cost to restore original floorboards starts with from £27 per square meter for sanding and a standard finish (like varnish or oil). This price can increase significantly depending on the floor's condition; for instance, extensive gap filling might add an extra £10 per square meter, while staining could be £10 per square meter. Factors like the amount of repair work needed for damaged or missing boards, the type of finish selected (some premium oils or lacquers are more expensive), and the complexity of removing old adhesives or multiple layers of paint will influence the final quotation.
