• What is the best finish for parquet flooring?

  Parquet flooring can be sealed with both lacquer or hardwax-oil. There are some advantages and disadvantages to both that you need to be aware of in order to make an informed decision. The most appropriate product usually depends on the type of flooring and the intensity of its use, as well as the desired appearance effect.

  For floors exposed to high level of foot traffic, we always recommend floor laqcuer as they provide a better protection layer. For our floor sanding projects we always use water-based lacquers such as Bona Mega or Bona Traffic HD, Junchers HT700, which are hard-wearing and long-lasting finishes.

  Alternatively, oil-based wood finishes provide a more natural feel and appearance, but they require more frequent maintenance in order to maintain the protection of the timber. We recommend Osmo Polyx hardwax-oil, which is a popular choice for our dust-free parquet restoration service.

  Whether you choose hardwearing laquer or oil-based sealant for your floors, make sure that you give it a good and smooth finish before the sealant is applied.

• Can an engineered wood flooring with underfloor heating be restored?

  Hi Tom,

  Yes, any engineered wood flooring can be sanded with or without underfloor heating, as long as the thickness of the top layer of the product is at least 3 mm.

  Engineered flooring products are manufcatured in thickness of 14-15 mm, 18 mm and 20 mm. Each time the floor is sanded, a small portion of the top layer is removed, so if the top layer becomes too thin, further sanding could compromise the integrity of the floor and potentially expose the underlying material. If you can check the thickness of your plank, you will also know how many times the floors can be sanded. 

  If you're unsure, a professional can help assess the condition of the floor and recommend the best course of action.

• Dog urine stains removal from an oak engineered flooring

  Urine stains on timber floors can be particularly challenging to remove. Ideally, the stains should be cleaned up immediately, as it's not just the liquid but the compounds in the urine that cause discoloration. Unfortunately, urine tends to penetrate deep into the wood. So, restoration (floor sanding & refinishing) will not be an option in this case.

  The best solution is often to replace the affected planks. Going with the option for the local replacement of planks is the best approach for the floor repairs, however, this requires having spare planks that match your existing flooring. • How long does it take for an oiled floor to dry?

  For an oiled wood floor, the initial drying time for light foot traffic typically ranges from 4 to 12 hours after the final coat, depending on the specific oil product used and environmental conditions like humidity and temperature in your home or premises. However, it's crucial to understand that "dry to touch" does not mean fully cured. For the oil to reach its maximum hardness and durability, allowing for heavy furniture placement and normal traffic, a full curing period of 5 to 14 days, and sometimes up to 30 days, is recommended. Adequate ventilation during this period is essential to facilitate proper curing.

• Can I change the color of my parquet flooring with restoration service?

  Yes, you can absolutely change the colour of your parquet flooring during the restoration service. Once the existing finish is sanded away, leaving the raw wood exposed, it becomes a blank canvas. This is the ideal stage to apply a wood stain before the final clear protective finish (oil or lacquer).
