February 2026 marks a monumental milestone for all of us at Floorworks. It is with immense pride, a deep sense of responsibility, and overwhelming emotion that we announce the successful completion of the heritage wood flooring restoration works at the Bank of England. To be chosen to work within the walls of such an esteemed institution is a career-defining honour, and we are absolutely thrilled to share the story of this journey with you.
The History of "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street"
Located at the iconic address of Threadneedle St, London, EC2R 8AH, the Bank of England has stood as a beacon of British financial resilience since it moved to this site in 1734. Affectionately known as "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street," the building is a true architectural marvel. Much of its legendary prestige was shaped by Sir John Soane, who acted as the Bank's architect from 1788 to 1833, designing a magnificent neo-classical complex. Although the building was largely rebuilt and expanded between 1925 and 1939 by Sir Herbert Baker to accommodate the modern needs of the institution, the Bank retained its awe-inspiring heritage, character, and grandeur—most notably within its exquisite Parlours.
The Restoration of the Bank of England Parlours
This extensive parquet flooring restoration project focused on the Bank of England Parlours, a space radiating history and elegance. The original parquet flooring, comprising a beautiful and intricate composition of teak and wenge timber, required an exceptional level of expertise to bring it back to its former glory. Given the historic significance of the venue, our dedicated Floorworks technicians approached the site with extreme care, reverence, and meticulous attention to detail.
Understanding the delicate environment of the historic building, our team utilised state-of-the-art, dust-free equipment from Bona. This ensured that the surrounding historic artefacts, architectural details, and pristine environment remained completely protected throughout the heavy sanding and preparation phases.
To finish and protect these stunning teak and wenge timber floors, the parquet was meticulously sealed with Bona Traffic HD in a sophisticated silk-matt sheen. This specific finish was carefully chosen to harmonise seamlessly with the Parlours' brilliantly polished mahogany doorways, keeping in line with the room's historic aesthetic and creating a breathtaking visual flow. This highly demanding initial stage of the extensive restoration project took approximately 4 weeks to complete.
A Heartfelt Thank You
As a company, being selected to carry out these works for the central bank of the United Kingdom has been a profound privilege. Our team poured their hearts into every square inch of this restoration. We are deeply grateful to the Bank of England for trusting Floorworks with their historic interiors, and we want to express our most sincere gratitude to their amazing maintenance team. Their daily support, brilliant coordination, and shared passion for heritage preservation made this complex endeavour an absolute joy to be a part of.
While we cannot show you the dust-free sanding in action or the wet finish drying on the timber, we hope this account conveys the magic of restoring one of London’s most treasured spaces. At Floorworks, we remain dedicated to reviving the beauty of wood floors and preserving history—one parquet block at a time.
