• Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before sealing, unfinished teak can resemble oak in its light color. However, once sealed, teak typically darkens to a rich brownish hue.

  Like other exotic timbers, teak can be tricky to seal with normal water-base primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. This type of primer provides the best base for finishing exotic timbers, and it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar), or stain the floors with white-tinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application. Applying these finishes on teak can be challenging, and we highly recommend to have a professional with experience in exotic woods handle the application.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

• Is it possible to restore 3-Strip engineered wood flooring?

  Three strip oak floorings usually come with 3 mm top layers and unless it has been sanded before it should be possible to restore. Once the existing sealant is completely removed through the sanding process, is perfectly fine to change the sealant from lacquer oil.

  Before you make the final decision on the most appropriate type of sealant for your engineered wood flooring restoration, bear in mind that oiled floors require more frequent maintenance and re-oiling to ensure long lasting protection.

• What is the best finish for parquet flooring?

  Parquet flooring can be sealed with both lacquer or hardwax-oil. There are some advantages and disadvantages to both that you need to be aware of in order to make an informed decision. The most appropriate product usually depends on the type of flooring and the intensity of its use, as well as the desired appearance effect.

  For floors exposed to high level of foot traffic, we always recommend floor laqcuer as they provide a better protection layer. For our floor sanding projects we always use water-based lacquers such as Bona Mega or Bona Traffic HD, Junchers HT700, which are hard-wearing and long-lasting finishes.

  Alternatively, oil-based wood finishes provide a more natural feel and appearance, but they require more frequent maintenance in order to maintain the protection of the timber. We recommend Osmo Polyx hardwax-oil, which is a popular choice for our dust-free parquet restoration service.

  Whether you choose hardwearing laquer or oil-based sealant for your floors, make sure that you give it a good and smooth finish before the sealant is applied.

• How often should I have my parquet floors restored?

  The frequency of professional restoration for your parquet floors largely depends on the level of wear and tear they experience. For residential properties with moderate foot traffic, a full re-sanding and re-finishing might be needed every 7 to 15 years. In high-traffic areas or commercial spaces, this could be more frequent, perhaps every 3-7 years. Conversely, in very low-traffic areas like bedrooms, a full restoration might only be necessary every 15-20 years or even longer.

• What are the pros and cons of oil-finished hardwood floors?

  Oil-finished hardwood floors offer a distinct set of pros and cons. Pros include a beautiful, natural, matte or satin aesthetic that deeply enhances the wood's grain and character.   Gaps between parquet blocks are a common issue that we address during restoration. The most effective and aesthetically pleasing method involves gap filling using a resin filler mixed with fine dust collected directly from your parquet floor during the initial sanding process. This bespoke mixture ensures the filler perfectly matches the colour and texture of your wood, creating a seamless and virtually invisible repair. For larger gaps or specific aesthetic preferences, sometimes individual slivers of wood can be inserted and glued, though the dust-and-resin method is generally preferred for its precision and speed. This technique not only improves the floor's appearance but also helps to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating in the gaps.
