• What is gap filling and how is it done?

  Gap filling usually refers to a procedure that is part of the floor restoration process, which uses a mixture of clear resin and saw dust, collected from the initial sanding and is used to fill in the gaps between the floorboards or between the parquet blocks. It is a very common service that often goes along with floorboards restoration and parquet floor sanding services. Sometimes, bigger gaps appear between the wooden planks and they require the use of wooden strips to be filled. This is called strip filling.

• Do you offer restoration of stairs and banisters?

  Sanding stairs and banisters is not an easy task and it requires high level skills and craftmanship. Most of the work involved is done manually and therefore it is very time consuming. We at FloorWorks would love to assist you with your stairs and banisters restoration as we have the required tools and the necessary skills and knowledge to bring their shine back. Stairs are usually exposed to higher levels of foot traffic, so hardwearing varnish is the recommended type of sealant.

• Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before sealing, unfinished teak can resemble oak in its light color. However, once sealed, teak typically darkens to a rich brownish hue.

  Like other exotic timbers, teak can be tricky to seal with normal water-base primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. This type of primer provides the best base for finishing exotic timbers, and it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar), or stain the floors with white-tinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application. Applying these finishes on teak can be challenging, and we highly recommend to have a professional with experience in exotic woods handle the application.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

• Is the floor restoration process noisy?

  Yes, the floor restoration process, particularly the sanding phase, is inherently noisy. Professional floor sanding machines, especially drum sanders used for the initial heavy-duty work, operate at high decibel levels, often comparable to heavy traffic or industrial machinery (around 85-90 dB). While modern dust-free sanding systems significantly reduce airborne dust, they do not eliminate noise. The noise intensity can vary throughout the process, being loudest during initial coarse sanding and becoming somewhat quieter with finer grits. • How often should I have my parquet floors restored?
