Over decades, those fixings can work loose. The board lifts slightly away from the joist when unloaded, and when a foot applies pressure it flexes down to contact the joist and springs back up when the foot lifts — and the movement against the loose fixing, or against the joist surface itself, produces the squeak.

The fix in these situations is more involved than a simple board re-fixing, and may involve lifting sections of the floor to add appropriate subfloor material.

  • Floating Floors Moving Against Each Other

    Floating floors — engineered timber and laminate installed without adhesive over an underlay — produce a different kind of squeak from fixed floors. The click-lock joints between planks can develop slight movement over time, particularly if the floor has expanded and contracted significantly through humidity cycles or if the underlay beneath it has compressed unevenly. The planks click or creak against each other at the joints when walked on.

    In engineered or glued floors, low humidity can strain adhesives, potentially causing detachment or lifting. For floating floors specifically, the underlay is the key variable — a compressed or degraded underlay allows the floor to flex unevenly, which creates the movement at the joints that produces the noise.

  • Humidity and Seasonal Movement

    This deserves a separate mention because it explains a pattern that many homeowners find confusing: floors that squeak in winter and are quiet in summer, or vice versa.

    Wood moves with moisture. In dry winter conditions with central heating running, boards contract — the tongue-and-groove joints between them open slightly and the movement that was absent in summer becomes present in winter. In humid summer conditions, the reverse happens: boards expand, press against each other, and in some cases create a different kind of noise at the perimeter where the expansion gap is inadequate.

Walk the floor slowly and map the squeak. Note exactly where it occurs — which board, which direction of walking, which part of the stride produces it. A squeak that occurs when you step on a specific spot and load it fully is in a different category from a squeak that occurs at the transition between your weight going on and coming off.

Check whether the squeak is seasonal. If it's much worse in winter and better in summer, humidity is the primary driver. If it's consistent regardless of season, the cause is structural.

A humidifier in rooms with significant timber flooring adds moisture back into the air that central heating removes — reducing the seasonal contraction that produces the movement.

  • Board Replacement

    For boards that are structurally compromised — cracked, rotted at the fixing point, or so thin from previous sanding that they flex excessively — replacement is the right answer.   • Subfloor Improvement

This is a significant intervention and not always necessary for every squeak, but where the floor is also being restored or refinished as part of wider project work, it's the opportunity to address the underlying structural deficiency at the same time.

What Doesn't Work

There are a few approaches that circulate online for squeaking floors that either don't work or cause problems worth knowing about.

Pouring lubricant or talcum powder over a floor as a general treatment — this treats the symptom and clogs the gaps between boards, creating a maintenance problem and potentially affecting how the floor takes a finish if it's restored later.

Adding more weight to the squeaking area — rugs and heavy furniture over a squeaking spot suppress the noise by preventing the floor from moving freely, but they don't fix anything and the squeak will reappear when they're moved.

Random re-nailing without identifying the cause — if the squeak is board-to-board friction rather than board-to-joist movement, adding nails at the joist positions does nothing. If the board is thin and fragile, additional nailing can split it.

Assuming the squeak will go away on its own — seasonal squeaks sometimes do reduce in summer. Structural squeaks don't improve over time; they usually worsen as the movement continues and the fixing points degrade further.

Squeaking that's been getting progressively worse over months or years suggests the cause is developing rather than stable. Addressing it before the movement causes secondary damage — split boards, damaged fixings, wear at the joint faces — is always cheaper than waiting.
