• Oak stained in dark wood base and white grain effect

  Hi,

  This example is shown on oak timber. This type of finish is achieved by application of Active Stain on top of oak timber, flollowed by application of white hardwax-oil on top - buffed in and sealed with another clear coat of oil on top.

  Some active stains are available from Woca (Active stain 1, 2, 3 and 4) and white oils are available from Osmo, Fiddes, Treatex (and other brands). 

  The process of active stain is slow - takes about a day and oils are slow-drying. It may be worth looking for a pre-finished product with similar appearance, instead of starting from scratch on bare wood.

• Dog urine stains removal from an oak engineered flooring

  Urine stains on timber floors can be particularly challenging to remove. Ideally, the stains should be cleaned up immediately, as it's not just the liquid but the compounds in the urine that cause discoloration. Unfortunately, urine tends to penetrate deep into the wood. So, restoration (floor sanding & refinishing) will not be an option in this case.

  The best solution is often to replace the affected planks. Going with the option for the local replacement of planks is the best approach for the floor repairs, however, this requires having spare planks that match your existing flooring.   Gaps between parquet blocks are a common issue that we address during restoration. The most effective and aesthetically pleasing method involves gap filling using a resin filler mixed with fine dust collected directly from your parquet floor during the initial sanding process. This bespoke mixture ensures the filler perfectly matches the colour and texture of your wood, creating a seamless and virtually invisible repair. For larger gaps or specific aesthetic preferences, sometimes individual slivers of wood can be inserted and glued, though the dust-and-resin method is generally preferred for its precision and speed. This technique not only improves the floor's appearance but also helps to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating in the gaps.

• How often should I have my parquet floors restored?

  The frequency of professional restoration for your parquet floors largely depends on the level of wear and tear they experience. For residential properties with moderate foot traffic, a full re-sanding and re-finishing might be needed every 7 to 15 years. In high-traffic areas or commercial spaces, this could be more frequent, perhaps every 3-7 years. Conversely, in very low-traffic areas like bedrooms, a full restoration might only be necessary every 15-20 years or even longer.

• Can engineered parquet flooring be refinished?

  Yes, engineered parquet flooring can often be refinished, but its refinishing potential depends critically on the thickness of its top hardwood veneer layer (wear layer). Unlike solid parquet, which can be sanded many times, engineered parquet has a finite amount of sandable wood. If the veneer is thick enough (typically 3mm or more), it can usually be sanded and refinished at least once, and sometimes two or three times over its lifetime.
